Giant pandas arrive at Chinese research base

ATLANTA (AP) — Two giant pandas born in Atlanta have arrived safely at their new home in China.

Zoo Atlanta officials say 5-year-old Xi Lan and 3-year-old Po arrived Thursday at China’s Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. They will be placed in routine quarantine for a short period before moving into their new habitats.

The two young pandas left Atlanta on Monday and arrived in Incheon, South Korea, for a layover Tuesday.

Zoo Atlanta Associate Veterinarian Sam Rivera and lead Keeper of Carnivores Kenn Harwood traveled with the pandas and is set to remain with them long enough to help them get acclimated.

Rivera and Harwood say the bears are adjusting well and that caregivers in Chengdu are excited to welcome them.
