Man in custody after shots fired in Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — A man is in custody after at least one shot was fired in the northwest section of Roanoke but no injuries were reported.

Spokesman Scott Leamon says the suspect was taken into custody Wednesday evening and taken for evaluation at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Charges are pending.

Police had responded to the area after 5 p.m. following a report of a man with a long rifle on the roof of the Starlite Motel. Traffic in the area was stopped and businesses were told to stay inside as a precaution.

Leamon said the suspect was unarmed when he was taken into custody but police found two firearms on the roof of the motel.

No other information was immediately available. Leamon said additional information would likely be released Thursday.
