5-year-old wounded by gunfire in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Richmond police are investigating a shooting that injured a 5-year-old boy.

Police say in a news release that shots were fired during a dispute and gunfire hit the child, who was playing nearby. He was taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound.

Police say the injury isn’t considered life-threatening.

The shooting occurred Sunday evening in the Whitcomb Court housing community.

Police Chief Ray J. Tarasovic is asking residents of the community who have any information to come forward. He called the shooting “a deplorable situation.”
