Joint Chiefs chairman to speak at VMI commencement

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff will speak at Virginia Military Institute’s commencement.

Gen. Martin E. Dempsey’s speech is scheduled for May 16. About 320 graduates will receive diplomas during the ceremony at Cameron Hall.

Other events set for graduation week include a ceremony and parade Thursday marking the 150th anniversary of the Battle of New Market. Ten VMI cadets died in the May 15, 1864, battle or later from their wounds.

Also on Thursday, nearly 150 cadets will commission into the Armed Forces.
