Coast Guard suspends search for missing kayaker

COLES POINT, Va. (AP) — The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a 23-year-old man after his kayak was found overturned on the Potomac River.

The Coast Guard says it suspended its search for Jeryll Dickerson about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Officials say a friend reported Dickerson missing Wednesday.

The friend told authorities that they left Coles Point Marina in Virginia for Tall Timbers Marina on the Maryland side of the river, where they planned to eat breakfast, but turned back after 30 minutes. The friend went on alone to get a motorboat to help bring Dickerson to shore, but lost sight of him after returning with the boat.

Police in Westmoreland County, Virginia, spotted an overturned kayak on the shore.
