Census: More Americans biking to work

WASHINGTON (AP) — More Americans are biking to work, though their numbers are still tiny compared to those in cars.

A new report from the Census Bureau says the annual average number of Americans who biked to work from 2008 to 2012 is about 786,000.

That’s almost 61 percent more than the 488,000 in the year 2000 who said they rode bikes to work.

The census says that of the nation’s 140 million workers in the period studied, 86.2 percent carpooled or drove to work alone. Only six-tenths of 1 percent biked while 2.8 percent went to work on foot.
