Haymarket man charged with killing infant son

WASHINGTON – A Prince William County father is charged with killing his 3-month-old son last summer.

David M. Schmidt, 28 of Haymarket, was arrested Thursday on charges of murder and felony child abuse.

According to Prince William County police, Schmidt is accused of killing his infant son Rhys, who died almost two weeks after he was taken to the hospital with injuries that police say resulted from the boy being shaken.

Schmidt called police on Aug. 5, 2013 to report that Rhys was not breathing. He died on Aug. 17, police say.

Schmidt was being held without bail Monday morning.
