WASHINGTON — The District of Columbia wrote 1,808,587 parking tickets in fiscal year 2013, netting $84.4 million in parking fines, according to AAA Mid- Atlantic.

That comes out to 5,986 tickets a day, six days a week, and AAA’s John Townsend says in a statement that it’s due to “high demand for far too few spaces … and the confusing signage that bedevils drivers.”

AAA notes that the numbers come to three tickets for every man, women and child in the District.

Both the ticket numbers and the fines are down from fiscal year 2012.

In 2012, the District issued 1,893,523 tickets and its parking revenue was $90,610,266.

“More drivers in the region are relying upon technology, including mobile phone apps, to find and to pay for parking. It is emerging as one of the biggest factors contributing to the drop in parking ticket violations and revenue across the metro area,” Townsend says.
