MedStar Washington named one of 2014’s ‘100 Great Hospitals in America’

MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Northwest D.C. was the only local hospital named to  2014’s “100 Great Hospitals in America” list compiled by health care industry publication Becker’s Hospital Review.

Becker’s pointed to MedStar’s reputation for taking on complicated cases, as well as its U.S. News & World Report ranking as one of the top 30 hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery for 2013-2014. Becker’s also cited the MedSTAR Transport program — its air ambulance service — as well as its shock trauma unit, adult burn center and new Center for Excellence in Nursing learning lab.

To create the list, Becker’s — an industry publication geared to high-level hospital administrators — evaluates hospital ranking sources, considers nominations and conducts research. Hospitals were judged on their credentials and focus on how to best care for patients in an era of health care reform. They could not pay to be included on the list, Becker’s said.

Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore both made the Top 100, as did the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center and the University of Virginia Medical Center.
