WASHINGTON – After two days of steady rain, the Monocacy River has spilled over its banks.

As of 9 a.m., the river had risen 4 inches above flood stage, which is 15 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

Only minor flooding is forecast as the river is expected to drop below flood stage Monday evening.

A flood warning remains in effect until late Monday.

The flood left Pinecliff Park in Frederick under 2 feet of water.

“Just hope that nobody’s out there. Tthat’s one of the biggest things. That’s why the parks department closes the roads here,” says Lt. Jeff Shippey with Frederick Fire and Rescue.

At 15 feet, the river typically floods lower fields at Monocacy National Battlefield and the water reaches the access road leading to the Frederick City wastewater treatment plant, according to the weather service.
