Blossom Kite Festival canceled

WASHINGTON — The Blossom Kite Festival, postponed until Sunday, March 30, has been canceled due to ground conditions caused by the weekend’s inclement weather, says Diana Mayhew, president of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

The Blossom Kite Festival, part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival events, was supposed to take place rain or shine on Sunday. But the windy and rainy conditions completely saturated the National Mall grounds where the event was to be held. Mayhew says damaging the grounds was a concern.

The event comes down to safety first and with the winds, poor visibility and the dampened monument grounds, the decision was made by officials.

“We are exploring the possibilities of looking at it being another date that we could possibly do it. The kite flyers, the kite community looks so forward to this event that we’ll do everything that we can to see if it could be rescheduled,” says Mayhew. “But at this time, there’s no exact date.”

The annual kite festival was rescheduled from it’s original Saturday, March 29 date due to rain and weather forecast conditions.
