Winter returns after balmy weekend

WASHINGTON – The Washington area got to enjoy a little relief from frigid winter temperatures over the weekend. However, it will be back to the weather grind Monday morning as a winter storm warning is in effect beginning Sunday evening through Monday afternoon for Northern and Western Virginia. Winter weather advisories have also been issued for Maryland’s Montgomery and Howard Counties.

Snow accumulations of five inches or more are expected for some areas. But ahead of the front, the area enjoyed temperatures in the 50s and 60s.

The ABC 7 News Weather Center advises to plan ahead for delays and cancellations.

The State Highway Administration says snow is expected during the Monday morning rush hour. Highway crews are to report overnight in preparation.

“The line between a slushy mess and more significant accumulations could be very thin,” the SHA says.

Counties to the west are expected to have higher accumulations with counties in and around the Baltimore/Washington metro areas a bit more uncertain.
