Pepco on Monday asked its customers to cut down their electricity usage on Tuesday because of an expected spike in demand due to frigid temperatures.

Pepco and PJM Interconnection, the electricity grid operator for much of the eastern U.S., issued “an urgent appeal” for people to set thermostats lower than usual, avoid using stoves, dishwashers and clothes dryers and turn off lights from 6 a.m.-10 a.m. and 5 p.m.-9 p.m.

Those times are expected to be the peak hours for electricity use during Tuesday’s next blast of arctic temperatures. The National Weather Service predicts wind chills in the single digits.

Pepco said PJM “continues to carefully monitor the power supply conditions,” and “will do everything possible to keep power flowing in the region.”
