WASHINGTON – Scammers are at it again and they’re using a frightening tactic to try to steal money from Northern Virginia residents.

The scam callers say they’ve kidnapped a loved one and then demand ransom money.

Last week, a scammer told a Manassas, Va., resident they kidnapped her daughter and ordered the woman to send money to Puerto Rico.

Similar incidents have also happened in Loudoun County, Va. A scammer called a Sterling, Va., family and demanded $1,800 for the safe return of their son.

Loudoun County and Manassas Park Police determined all of the family members were safe and never in any danger.

Officials remind residents to never give out personal information to someone they don’t trust. If you think it’s a hoax, hang up and call 911.
