WASHINGTON – Pepco is out with a warning for its customers: Scammers are sending out fake utility bills, posing as third-party suppliers.

The phony bills arrive via email. When customers click on the link in the email, computers could be infected with malware or a virus, Pepco says.

Pepco says you should only pay utility bills on Pepco.com or by mailing in a hard copy. The utility says it never endorses a specific form of payment and multiple options ar always given to customers.

If anyone calls representing Pepco, the utility says customers should get the caller to verify their identity and affliation. Anyone with any doubt should call Pepco at 202-833-7500.
