Charles County holds contest to rename snakehead

WASHINGTON – Names can mean a lot. The commissioners of Charles County think so, so they’re holding a contest to give a species of fish an image upgrade.

The snakehead comes from Asia, but it’s been in the area for a few years. It’s a tough-looking customer, eating anything that swims its way.

Those in the know say they’re tasty, but who’s going to order a snakehead for dinner? Not many. National Geographic has already called the snakehead “fishzilla,” but that’s not much better.

That’s what the commissioners want to fix. They’re holding a contest to rename the snakehead, and you can enter here. Take your best shot – only one entry per person.

The winning name will be sent to the Department of Natural Resources in the hope that the state will consider changing the fish’s name.
