Taxpayers will see a delay in state returns

WASHINGTON – Taxpayers will continue to feel the effects of the government shutdown last October as state tax returns will be delayed.

In years past, early filers could count on getting their tax refund as early as next week. But in Maryland and Virginia, those returns will be slower to arrive.

The IRS delayed the start of the tax filing season for one to two weeks after the 16-day federal shutdown. According to Maryland state comptroller Peter Franchot, the IRS will begin processing state returns between Jan. 28 – Feb.1, 2014. Last year, processing started a week earlier.

Then-acting IRS commissioner Daniel Werfel said in October that the federal shutdown came during the agency’s peak period for readying its processing systems and would slow things down the line.

Both Maryland and Virginia let you check the status of your tax return online.
