Fairfax County Public Schools, faced with a critical shortage of space, has turned to the commercial real estate market for relief. Fairfax Times reports the school system has purchased a five-story office building on Leesburg Pike for $9.4 million to ease the overflowing population at Bailey’s Elementary.

Bailey’s Elementary has the largest enrollment of any county elementary school, with 1,360 students enrolled as of November. The building was designed to hold just 1,020 students.

The converted office building is the first of its kind in Fairfax and will serve as a second campus for Bailey’s, likely housing students in grades 3 to 5 beginning next fall.
