ALEXANDRIA — More than a month ago, Ron Kirby, a regional transportation planner, was found murdered in his Alexandria living room. Now, friends are helping police reach out for leads.

“We still think there are people who can help us in this process,” says Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook.

Cook made a plea to the public on Tuesday to help in the investigation into Kirby’s murder.

“Because Mr. Kirby had such a big footprint in this field nationally, he may have been in contact with people in his travels that we’re not aware of,” Cook says.

Police investigators are hoping to hear from anyone who had contact with Ron Kirby in the last four to five weeks of his life.

To encourage new leads, Kirby’s former workplace, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, and the Del Ray Business Foundation, are starting a reward fund to which friends and colleagues can contribute.

Starting at $5,000, Cook says it could help make a difference in solving this case.

Donations can be made in cash or by check, payable to the Ron Kirby Reward Fund. Donations can be dropped off at the Del Ray branch of Virginia Commerce Bank or sent to the Del Ray Business Foundation.

Donations will be used to fund the reward until police say it’s no longer necessary, according to fund administrators.
