Local school systems still work to improve security in wake of Newtown

WASHINGTON – In the year since the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 28 dead, there have been noticeable changes at local schools to improve security.

Since the shooting on Dec. 14, 2012, local school systems have added police officers and security features.

Prince William County has funded an additional 15 police officers for schools. Also, Montgomery County has added six additional officers for its schools.

Prince George’s County has plans to create a school district police force. The county has already started a several-million-dollar project to install electronically-controlled entrances, panic buttons and cameras at all of its schools.

Montgomery and Fairfax counties are adding systems that make visitors “buzz in” at entrances, according to The Washington Post.
