The D.C. Yellow Cab insignia will live on — in black.

Ron Linton, the District’s Taxicab Commission chairman, has reversed a staff decision denying the Yellow Cab Co. of D.C.’s bid to install the insignia on its new cars, all of which must be painted in the approved red and gray color scheme.

The insignias will have to be black as opposed to the recognizable orange, Linton wrote Thursday in a letter to Roy Spooner, Yellow Cab’s general manager. Still, it’s a quasi-victory for the company.

Spooner had initially bid to place the orange insignia on the rear passenger side of his 550 vehicles. But the commission staff rejected that plan — both the insignia color and the insignia itself — late last month, arguing it “compromises the uniformity of the city’s color scheme” and “could distract a passenger from focusing on the primary identifier of the vehicle.”

Spooner said he will not appeal Linton’s decision to the full commission.

The deal is done. The insignia stays.
