Upscale food retailer Dean & DeLuca will begin selling fresh doughnuts from Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken starting Friday.
The store will carry four varieties of pastry chef Jason Gehring’s doughnuts: vanilla glazed, maple bacon, peanut butter and jelly and crème brûlée. The doughnuts will be available Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Astro Doughnuts has taken off in its first year in the District, with its creme brulee doughnut taking the top prize in the Washington Post’s Dozen Weeks of Doughnuts competition.
Its success is part of a larger doughnut explosion in the District: GBD (Golden Brown and Delicious), another doughnut and fried chicken place from Neighborhood Restaurant Group, and Chocolate Crust in Petworth opened in the past year.
There’s even a “D.C. Donut Crawl” planned for laster this month, in which more than 100 doughnut aficionados have signed up to ride bikes to four of the city’s doughnut spots.
