Explore Mars’ red surface in new video

WASHINGTON – The mysteries of the Red Planet have long attracted scientists and space nerds alike.

Now, humans can get a firsthand look at Mars thanks to the European Space Agency’s Mars Express probe, which has orbited the planet more than 12,500 times, Smithsonian Magazine reports.

The probe collected topographical data using high-resolution cameras, radar-sensing devices and spectrometers to detect minerals on the planet’s surface, Smithsonian reports.

Using that data, the ESA built a simulated flyover of the Red Planet. Watch it below:
