Va. celebrates Columbus Day with tax holiday

WASHINGTON – People paying high taxes might joke about getting “hosed,” but new plumbing will be tax free in some cases in Virginia this weekend.

Virginia’s sales tax holiday on Energy Star and WaterSense qualified products lasts through Monday, Oct. 14. Monday is a federal holiday to commemorate Columbus Day.

The tax exemption applies to items costing $2,500 or less and includes everything from toilets and faucets to ceiling fans and refrigerators.

In Northern Virginia the sales tax is 6 percent.

Maryland has a sales tax holiday for Energy Star products coming up in February.
