SPRINGFIELD, Va. (AP) – Family and friends will celebrate the life of a longtime Navy officer who was among the 12 people slain by a gunman at the Washington Navy Yard.

The church service Saturday in Springfield will honor 54-year-old Martin Bodrog of Annandale. He retired as a commander after a 22-year career, and then worked as a civilian overseeing the design and procurement of Navy ships.

Bodrog was killed Monday by Aaron Alexis, an information-technology contractor with a history of erratic behavior. Investigators say Alexis brought a shotgun to work and also used a handgun he seized after fatally shooting a security guard.

Bodrog and his wife had three daughters. The family is directing any donations to the charitable arm of the Boston Bruins, the hockey team Bodrog loved.
