Bethesda Area Falls In Tech Startup Rankings

Downtown BethesdaThe Bethesda-Fredrick-Rockville metropolitan area has the ninth highest density of tech startup companies in the country, according to a report released this month.

But the report, from entrepreneurship nonprofit the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, shows the area saw one of the largest decreases in high-tech startup densities since 2000, when it was ranked behind only Silicon Valley on the list.

The Washington DC-Arlington-Alexandria metropolitan area jumped higher on the list, from No. 10 to No. 6. Silicon Valley, or the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA metro area remained the most densely populated by tech startups.

Montgomery County officials are pushing to change the county’s business-unfriendly reputation, especially when it comes to attracting high tech firms.
