Beach Boys seek crowdsourced guitar solo

WASHINGTON – We’ve all fantasized about playing or singing on a hit record – now fans of the Beach Boys are being asked to contribute a guitar solo for a recently-uncovered track.

The song, “Goin’ To The Beach,” written by Beach Boys singer Mike Love, was originally recorded without a lead guitar track in 1979.

The track was recently released on a new box set, “Made In California.”

From now until Sept. 20, guitarists can play along and upload their solo using the Tongal online platform.

The band and Capitol Records will judge the entries and choose a winner.

The completed song, including the crowdsourced guitar solo, will be released as an alternate take on the band’s website.

The co-founder of Tongal says consumers in today’s digital world are finding new music in ways other than radio and CDs.

“Their number one discovery method is YouTube and labels need to feed that,” James De Julio tells ClickZ, an interactive marketing website.

In addition to performing on the track, the grand prize winner will also receive a custom Fender Stratocaster guitar. Nine finalists will also receive prizes.
