Charles County speed cameras turn back on Monday

WASHINGTON — The switch will go back on Monday for three speed cameras in Charles County that have been offline since late July. The Charles County Sheriff’s Office will reactivate automated speed enforcement cameras in designated school zones starting Monday, Sept. 2.

The agency’s three cameras were temporarily deactivated last month when the agency realized one of the camera sites was not in compliance with Maryland state regulations.

Since then, a thorough review of all camera sites has been completed and all sites meet requirements, according to a statement by the sheriff’s office.

Speed enforcement cameras are activated Monday – Friday from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. They operate all year long including holidays. The cameras are rotated throughout various school zones, usually every two weeks, and the locations of the cameras are posted on the Charles County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

During the week of Sept. 2-6, speed cameras will be activated near McDonough High School and Craik Elementary School, both on Marshal Corner Road in Pomfret.

The sheriff’s office also says it is looking into issues with a third camera on Berry Road in Waldorf near Jenifer Elementary School that was illegally put outside a school zone. Under Maryland law, drivers must get a warning about a school zone before crossing a speed camera.

But deputies say all these sites now meet requirements.

Still, the Charles County Sheriff is working out how to issue refunds to those drivers who paid citations stemming from speeding violations in this location.
