Student Brings Homemade Firework To B-CC, Prompting Police Response — The student didn’t attempt to use the firework, according to MCPS. Police K-9 units checked the science lab where the device was found and the entire school on Thursday evening. No other fireworks were found. [NBC Washington]

4935 Bar and Kitchen Runs Into Permitting Issues, Closes Upstairs Lounge — The new restaurant and upstairs lounge at 4935 Cordell Ave. was planned for months ago. The lounge opened in December 2012. But permitting issues involving the building’s spiral staircase meant the restaurant never opened and the second-floor lounge closed earlier this summer. Gansler Proposes Cut In Corporate Tax Rate To Compete With Virginia — Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Doug Gansler (D) on Thursday proposed cutting the state’s corporate tax rate from 8.25 percent to 6 percent to match Virginia’s rate. Gansler said the move would help Maryland compete for businesses and jobs with its Potomac River rival. [Washington Post]
