WASHINGTON – No pain no gain, right? A major commuter route that is way overdue for a makeover will undergo a facelift but it will involve lane closures to make the improvements.

Starting on Monday, Wisconsin Avenue, or Route 355, will see lane closures between Bradley Boulevard and Montgomery Avenue. The project is one of many beginning to fix 355 from the D.C. line to the Beltway as well as improve access to the new Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda.

Charlie Gischlar, with Maryland’s State Highway Administration, says work will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. involving single-lane closures. Portions of Wisconsin Avenue haven’t been resurfaced in 14 years. “It’s about time for that. It’s pretty much in need of a makeover,” he says.

About 67,000 vehicles use 355 south of the Beltway each day, and the usage has increase because of the BRAC impact from the Walter Reed move.

The project is being funded through Maryland’s new gas tax.
