WASHINGTON – Caroline Kennedy appears to be worth about $250 million, according to her personal financial disclosure reports.
Kennedy, the daughter of late President John F. Kennedy, is President Barack Obama’s nominee to be ambassador to Japan. USA Today reports part of the nomination process requires Kennedy to disclose her financial holdings, which are available on the U.S. Office of Government Ethics website.
The 55-year-old’s estimated $250 million personal fortune stems in part from holdings that include investments in Apple and Goldman Sachs, commercial properties in Chicago and Washington and school district bonds in different states, according to USA Today. Kennedy’s holdings are listed in broad ranges, which make it impossible to determine her exact net worth.
Kennedy also has holdings through family trusts, USA Today says. She reported that she took in more than $580,000 in connection with her 2011 book, “Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy.” She additionally disclosed that four speeches in a one-year period earned her about $325,000, according to USA Today.
Ethics rules require top officials to disclose their assets and income to avoid potential conflicts of interest.
In a statement, Kennedy said she would resign from multiple board positions she holds upon Senate confirmation. Her resignations would affect her positions with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and Cities of Service.
“I will remain alert to the possible need for recusal where appropriate,” Kennedy said in a letter dated July 15 to Richard Visek of the Department of State.
