WASHINGTON – A 17-year-old was killed on Interstate 66 Tuesday morning in what Virginia State Police are investigating as a suicide.
Investigators believe the Fairfax teenager was hit by a tractor-trailer on the interstate at U.S. 50 sometime after 4:40 a.m.
Police got a report of a pedestrian walking on the right shoulder of the eastbound lanes of the interstate at 4:41 a.m.
While on their way to the scene, police received a second report that the person had been struck.
“He was just a pedestrian on the interstate. We think it may have been a tractor- trailer that he walked into the side of,” said Sgt. C.W. Davis.
“He was walking along the edge, right along the white line.”
Police have not identified the young man.
Based on the investigation, police say he was struck in the right lane and landed in the shoulder at the 57 mile marker.
State police want anyone who saw the pedestrian walking along the highway or saw him being struck to call them at 703-803-0026.
The eastbound lanes of I-66 were backed up due to the investigation Tuesday morning. They reopened around 10 a.m.
Police have not located the vehicle involved in the incident and encourage anyone who might have seen it or know anything about it to contact them.
