WASHINGTON – The mother accused of abducting her two young boys from Children’s National Medical Center has a history of trouble with the law.

Mikisha Funderburk, 27, was charged with prostitution after an arrest last May.

D.C. police spokesman Araz Alali says Funderburk is currently under investigation by the D.C. Child and Family Services Agency for allegations of child cruelty.

According to sources, both of the boys sustained bad bruises.

Alali says at about 4 p.m. Thursday, the 10-year-old and 5-year-old were with a social worker at the hospital to be evaluated when Funderburk distracted the caregiver and left the hospital with the boys.

ABC7 says it is not clear whether the children were in protective custody.

The Metropolitan Police Department released a picture of Funderburk and descriptions of the children asking the public to help to find the family.

It’s unclear how Funderburk and her children were located about six hours later. Police say a social worker and police investigator found them in Rockville, Md. They were safe.

The boys are back in the care of D.C. Child and Family Services. The investigation into the alleged abduction and allegations of abuse is continuing.

Funderburk is expected in court on the Prince George’s County prostitution charges Aug. 29.
