Men Against Breast Cancer 5K Coming To Bethesda

A local nonprofit that teaches men how to care for family members with breast cancer will hold its first 5K, fun run and walk in October in Bethesda.

Silver Spring native Marc Heyison started Men Against Breast Cancer in 1999 after helping to care for his mother, who is a more than 20-year survivor of the disease.

Heyison says the organization is the first and only national nonprofit that provides targeted half-day and full-day educational workshops to help men take care of wives, sisters and mothers who have breast cancer.

Heyison said he wanted to do the group’s first 5K in Bethesda because it’s a destination. It’s also a natural location considering it’s the home to many of the event’s sponsors — Bubbles Salon, Comcast SportsNet, City Sports and Honest Tea.

The race will start at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 5 at Bethesda Avenue and Arlington Road and wind around the Edgemoor neighborhood before wrapping up back near Bethesda Row.

Heyison is hoping for 1,000 participants. The event will also include a walk and fun run.
