Report: Health care workers see most on-the-job injuries, illnesses

WASHINGTON – The most dangerous field to work in is: health care.

USA Today reports health care workers suffer more injuries and illnesses on the job than those in any other industry, according to a report by an advocacy nonprofit.

There were about 654,000 workplace injuries and illnesses among health care workers in 2010. That number is about 152,000 more than in manufacturing, the field with the second-most incidents.

Insufficient standards and federal inspections at health care sites are blamed in the report by the group Public Citizen.

The report says construction sites are inspected 20 times more often by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration than health care facilities.
