Powerball jackpot hits $300 million

WASHINGTON – Many people wait to play Powerball until the jackpot gets big enough. Starting Saturday, it might be worth a shot.

The Maryland Lottery announced on Friday that Saturday’s Powerball jackpot will be $300 million, with a cash option of $172 million.

Of course, there’s still room to grow – lottery officials say that the biggest Powerball jackpot ever was $600 million, in May of this year. And the biggest American multistate lottery prize ever was a $656 million Mega Millions prize awarded last year. (A Maryland woman was one of three winners of that jackpot.)

The drawing will be held Saturday at 11:22 p.m.
