WASHINGTON – Fairfax County has named a familiar face as its newest police chief.

The board of supervisors Tuesday appointed Lt. Col. Edwin Roessler Jr. as chief. He will earn an annual salary of $188,410, according to the county.

He has served as acting chief since March. He replaces former chief David Rohrer who left the department in October 2012 to take the position of deputy county executive for public safety.

Roessler is a 24-year veteran of law enforcement. And prior to taking on the role of interim chief, Roessler served as the deputy chief of patrol and oversaw the construction of the Sully District Station. He has also managed the department’s budget and human resources and served as director of the Criminal Justice Academy, according to a county statement released in March.

He will oversee a department with about 1,400 sworn officers and a budget of more than $234 million.

Roessler lives in Centreville and his duties start immediately.
