WTOP’s Top 10: The best local charity

WASHINGTON – Your top pick for the best charity in the D.C. region is going to the dogs.

Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc., and the orphaned dogs the organization cares for, are lucky to be your top pick.

“We are always looking for new fosters and always on the lookout for new homes that can temporarily keep the dog ’til they find their forever home,” says volunteer and Lab Rescue board member Sarah Hoddinott.

For 21 years, Labrador retrievers have been the top dog in America, according to the American Kennel Club.

“They are really just fabulous dogs,” says Hoddinott. “They keep you laughing and they keep you on your toes and they really make great family pets.”

Unfortunately, many of these great dogs are finding their way to area shelters, as owners give them up, due to lack finances or time. Sometimes the dogs Lab Rescue recovers are pulled out of abusive situations. All of these animals are just waiting for a chance at a life in a loving home.

That is where Lab Rescue comes in. The organization is staffed by volunteers who give their time, their homes and their hearts in hopes of helping these dogs get that chance.

Hoddinott says the organization couldn’t do what it does without the volunteers. She hopes the exposure from WTOP’s Top Ten will get people thinking of adding another member to their family.

“There is nothing cuter than a lab puppy,” Hoddinott says. “And right now we have a lot of puppies looking for homes.”

If you are thinking of adopting a dog or volunteering your time, contact Lab Rescue.

You will be rewarded with wet kisses, a wagging tail and a friend for life.
