WASHINGTON – The installation of message signs on the SE/SW Freeway will cause delays for commuters over the next several weeks.

One eastbound and one westbound lane of the SE/SW Freeway are closed near the South Capitol Street exit as crews work to install new dynamic message signs above the roadway, according to the District of Columbia Department of Transportation. The lane closures began Saturday, July 20 and will go through Aug. 10.

Construction barrels and concrete jersey barrier walls occupy the lanes closed to traffic. As of Monday, the eastbound lanes have two lanes open to traffic and the westbound lanes have three lanes open to traffic.

To remove the heavy equipment, an additional left lane will be temporarily closed between 2 a.m. and noon on or about Aug. 10. Also, an additional left lane will be closed during two consecutive overnight periods between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. starting on or about Thursday, July 25.
