The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission says the break in the 12-inch main occurred after 1:30 a.m. Friday.

The main dates back to 1949.

Water in the area has been shut off.

WSSC says about 40 customers are affected.

WSSC crews arrived around 7 a.m. and began work around 8 a.m. Friday.

Repairs are expected to take six to eight hours, says WSSC spokesman Jerry Irvine.
