Alexandria fire department spends Fourth putting out fireworks

WASHINGTON – The Alexandria Fire Department had a busy Fourth of July, but not from fighting fires: The department says in a statement that fire marshals seized about 500 illegal fireworks in the course of the day.

All fireworks are illegal in Alexandria, and the fire department says they patrolled the city and received 50 calls on the Fourth about people using fireworks of various kinds.

Evidently, it worked: The fire department says that “there were no injuries or fires resulting from the discharge of fireworks” in Alexandria during Independence Day celebrations this year.
