WASHINGTON – People from all over the world come to Virginia to tour Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, and now they can see the sights without leaving home with Google Maps Street View.

Leslie Green Bowman, president and CEO of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, writes on the Google Maps blog that people can look through the interior and exterior of Monticello, zooming in on the features that interest them most. And she gives tips on some of the history behind the house and grounds.

She adds that Jefferson would have approved of the new technology. “We’re all inspired by seeing new parts of the world and trying new things – two things that Jefferson was very passionate about,” she writes.

Bowman adds words from the man himself: “When I contemplate the immense advances in science and discoveries in the arts which have been made within the period of my life, I look forward with confidence to equal advances by the present generation.”

She writes that Google is also publishing Street View maps of the walking paths around the University of Virginia, which Jefferson founded.
