MOUNT RAINIER, Md. – A 70-year-old man is dead and two firefighters injured after a house fire in Prince George’s County Tuesday night.
The fire started before 10 p.m. at a residence in the 3700 block of 36th Street in Mount Rainier, about 2 miles away from the D.C.-Maryland border. When fire crews arrived, they found the man unconscious on the top floor of the house with severe burns over most of his body, according to Prince George’s County fire officials. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet released information about the man’s identity.
Officials say one firefighter sustained second-degree burns to his upper body and another injured his knee when a ladder gave way. Both were treated and released.
Two other people were in the house at the time of the blaze. Officials say two other residents heard the smoke alarm and were able to escape unharmed.
Authorities are working to determine what caused the fire. They have not yet released information about the estimated cost of damage caused by the blaze.
