World Trade Center beams to be displayed at local memorial

WASHINGTON – Four steel beams taken from what was left of the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 have been sitting idle for years.

But this weekend, they are finally getting some attention.

Concrete is being removed from the beams and they are being readied for installation in a memorial to honor the 22 Prince William county residents killed on 9/11.

The beams have been at Prince William County’s police academy in Nokesville, Va. for the past two years and will be displayed on the county’s ellipse. InsideNova reports plans for the memorial have been delayed due to tight budget constraints over the past few years.

Earlier this month, the county’s board of supervisors approved hundreds of thousands of dollars in contingency funds to pay for cleaning the beams and incorporating them into the memorial.

They are hoping work will be completed by Sept. 11 of this year.
