Arlington may lower speed limit in downtown areas

WASHINGTON – Arlington may lower the speed limit in parts of its busy downtown sections.

A part of the county’s adopted Master Transportation Plan calls for a standard speed limit of 25 miles per hour for arterial streets within the county’s “downtown” districts “on which there are high volumes of pedestrian crossings and higher density land development.”

In a specific change now under consideration, speed limits would be lowered on these stretches of road:

  • N. Meade Street from Arlington Boulevard to Marshall Drive
  • Clarendon Boulevard from Washington Boulevard to N. Oak Street
  • Wilson Boulevard from Route 110 to Washington Boulevard
  • N. Sycamore Street from Washington Boulevard to 17th Street N.

ABC 7 reports the reductions would change the official speed limit from 30 to 25 mph.

The board for Arlington County set July 15 as the date for a public hearing on the possible changes.
