WASHINGTON – WTOP has been presented with eight awards from the Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association, along with an AP Cooperation Award, which recognizes the station’s strong contribution to covering news.
The awards were presented to WTOP staff members in Ocean City, Md., at the annual CAPBA convention on Saturday.
In addition, WTOP has earned three regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for best newscast, investigative reporting and breaking news coverage. Those awards have WTOP in contention for three national Murrow awards.
The CAPBA awards presented were:
- Outstanding Website: WTOP.com
- Outstanding Spot News, “A Date With Sandy”: WTOP Staff
- Outstanding Newscast: WTOP Staff
- Outstanding Year-Round Local Sports: WTOP Staff
- Outstanding Multimedia Online Journalism, “Back Behind The Wheel, Triple Amputee Takes On The Beltway”: Darci Marchese
- Best Reporter: Kristi King
- Outstanding Editorial or Commentary, “Core Values”: Chris Core
- Outstanding Sports Feature, “Foosball Tourney”: Brennan Haselton
Brennan Haselton’s feature also won a regional Murrow award and is in contention for a national Murrow award. Also in contention for a national Murrow award is WTOP’s breaking news coverage of superstorm Sandy.
WTOP has been awarded a third regional Murrow for investigative reporting for Adam Tuss’ “Metro Bus Crashes” story. That story also is up for a national Murrow award.
