WASHINGTON – A New Jersey law enforcement officer has been charged with murder after a fatal shooting in Anne Arundel County that appears to have stemmed from a road rage incident.

Maryland State Police say the road rage altercation may have taken place shortly before 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Route 3 and Route 175.

Afterward, police say 36-year-old Joseph Harvey Jr. and 40-year-old Joseph Walker stopped on the shoulder of the Interstate 97 ramp off of northbound Route 3. Harvey and a passenger in his green Honda Accord got out of the vehicle, police say, and Harvey began walking toward Walker’s gold Kia minivan.

Police say Walker, of East Ampton, N.J., then fired a .45-caliber Glock and hit Harvey, of Halethorpe, Md.

Harvey later died at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. The passenger in Harvey’s car was not hurt.

Police say Walker was taken to the hospital after complaining of chest pains. Authorities later confirmed he is a sworn officer with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in New Jersey.

Walker has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. He is being held on $1 million bond at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center.
