Metro worker charged with stealing 13 defibrillators

WASHINGTON – A Metro maintenance worker was charged on Thursday for stealing 13 defibrillators from WMATA facilities and selling them on eBay for a fraction of their worth, according to a news release.

Derrick Davis, 40, of Laurel, Md., was charged in Prince George’s County with theft over $1,000 after a multi-month investigation that ended Wednesday when a transit detective posed as a potential buyer and arranged to purchase an Automatic External Defibrillator for $300 at a local convenience store, officials say.

After his arrest, Davis admitted to stealing 13 of the devices from Metro. The medical devices are worth approximately $1,400 each. Combined, the theft was valued at about $18,000.

Davis was suspended from Metro immediately following his arrest.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed.
