WASHINGTON – A 28-year-old New Jersey man has been arrested in Stafford County, Va., in what authorities say is one of the largest drug seizures of its type in the region’s history.

Steve Carrington Durham Jr., of Brick, N.J., was stopped while driving the night of May 8 in the Courthouse Road area of Stafford. During a search of the vehicle’s trunk, the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office says authorities found 2 kilograms of heroin with an estimated street value of $270,000.

The sheriff’s office says the incident followed a detective’s investigation into the shipment of a large quantity of heroin that was to be picked up in Stafford County and delivered south of the Fredericksburg area.

Durham has been charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I or II narcotic and is being held without bond.

Authorities say Durham had been out on bail for a similar offense that occurred in New Jersey, and additional charges are likely.
