WASHINGTON – State and local investigators are working to determine what led to the collapse of a 50,000-pound section of concrete at a parking garage at the Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda on Thursday.
The collapse killed construction worker Carroll Dexter Wills, 57, of Prince Frederick, Md., and pinned another seriously injured worker for four hours until rescuers could free him. The other worker’s identity hasn’t been released.
The accident is under investigation by the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health branch of the State Department of Labor.
The Baltimore-based Whiting Turner construction firm was working on the site, but it’s not clear whether the company is the contractor or subcontractor. No one from Whiting Turner would comment.
The mall shops are open for business, but the construction area has not been open to the public during renovations.
